Optimizing Harvest Operations Across 180 Farm Vehicles

During peak harvest season, this agricultural cooperative needed precise coordination of 180 vehicles across dispersed farmlands. Open VTS provided the real-time fleet visibility needed to optimize field-to-silo logistics and reduce costly fuel waste.

The Challenge

The cooperative managed 180 vehicles during peak season, including tractors, combine harvesters, and grain transport trucks. Without centralized tracking, field supervisors relied on radio communication to coordinate movements. Fuel costs spiked during harvest due to redundant trips and idle vehicles waiting for loads. Per-vehicle SaaS pricing was prohibitive for seasonal-only usage at this fleet size.

02

Implementation

Open VTS was deployed on a local server at the cooperative headquarters. GPS trackers were installed across the entire fleet, with seasonal devices added to rented equipment. Field boundary geofences were configured for each farm parcel. Real-time dashboards were provided to field supervisors via tablet devices. Fuel consumption analytics were enabled through OBD-connected trackers on transport trucks.

Outcomes

Fuel waste during harvest season decreased by 19% through better route coordination and reduced idle time. Vehicle utilization rates improved by 25%, with fewer vehicles idle at any given time. The cooperative eliminated the need for seasonal SaaS subscriptions, saving significantly on a per-season basis. Supervisors reported faster decision-making through real-time field visibility.

Harvest season is our most critical window. Open VTS let us see every tractor and truck in real time, so we could make decisions based on data instead of radio chatter.
